Research

At its inception, Drayer Physical Therapy Institute (DPTI)forged a relationship with the University of Delaware (UD) as an expression of our commitment to physical therapy research. We have appointed Dr. Irene Davis, PhD, PT, a professor in the UD Physical Therapy Department our Director of Research. Dr. Davis received her bachelor's degree in Exercise Science from the University of Massachusetts, and in Physical Therapy from the University of Florida. She earned her master's degree in Biomechanics from the University of Virginia, and her PhD in Biomechanics from Pennsylvania State University. She is currently a Professor in Physical Therapy at UD, and Director of the Running Research Laboratory at the University of Delaware. Dr. Davis has been studying the relationship between lower extremity structure, mechanics and injury in runners for the past 20 years.

The motivation to include a research component to our business is best encapsulated in the following DPTI Research Mission Statement:

At Drayer Physical Therapy Institute, we are committed to being life-long learners. We believe that providing the most effective and clinically superior physical therapy stems, in part, from the knowledge gained through quality research.

We are dedicated to the process of conducting and disseminating scientifically sound and clinically relevant research. This will produce evidence to provide our patients with a solid basis of treatment and an optimal healing environment. We are also committed to critically analyzing existing research so that we can make well-educated decisions about integrating this into our own clinical practice.

We believe that our efforts to continually challenge ourselves to evolve professionally are a testament of our leadership, passion, and dedication to the field of physical therapy.

To this end, Dr. Davis has instituted monthly journal clubs within the DPTI clinics in order for our therapists to become critical consumers of the research literature. In addition, DPTI has committed to supporting three doctoral level graduate students in the Biomechanics and Movement Sciences Program at UD under Dr. Davis' advisement. DPTI also supports some of the ongoing research in Dr. Davis' Lab. Along with presentations at scientific meetings and publications in peer reviewed journals, the results of this research are conveyed to all of the members of the DPTI organization through quarterly internal newsletters. Dr. Davis and the DPTI supported doctoral students also help to write a quarterly external newsletter that focuses on a sports medicine topic that is relevant to the current season. This newsletter provides useful clinical and scientific information for both the lay reader, as well as the medical professional.  Finally, Dr. Davis works with DPTI to develop an annual national conference that encompasses the most current clinical and scientific aspects of orthopedics and sports medicine.

DPTI is passionately committed to the physical therapy profession as well as the continued development of our employees. This research partnership is a testament to that commitment.
